Program Notes

The Princess, the Knight and the Dragon is a narrated story for children. Many narrated concert works for children, like Peter and the Wolf, are fairly challenging to play or require a large ensemble or full orchestra. My goal with this piece was to write something that was intended for children but could also be played by children. Therefore, the violin and piano part in this piece are both fairly simple.

Most beginners wouldn’t want to learn 20 minutes of music! So, I would suggest that this piece would be perfect for a group of violin students to play, where the less advanced students learn the easier movements and the more advanced students learn the more difficult movements. Then they could all come together, either with a single adult accompanist or a similarly organized group of beginner pianists, to perform this work at a concert.
