Program Notes
After she retired, my mom started taking violin lessons with my sister (which made for an interesting role reversal!). She asked me to write her a violin sonata, which I did, and sent it to her on her birthday. Even though I followed all the guidelines that she sent me, I think the piece was rather more difficult than she had bargained for! But she was a good sport and has played different movements at various concerts since then.
The piece is divided into four movements:
- Allegro (3 minutes)
- Lento (4 minutes)
- Theme and Variations (4 minutes)
- Maestoso – Presto (4 minutes)
Each movement uses a minor ninth or augmented octave prominently somewhere in its main theme. The harmony is modern but still very much tonal.
